Many many explanations about hardware and software stuff. Analog sound effects part analysis fully described with exclusive schematics and computations (NE555 oscillator, charging/discharging capacitor, noise generator).

More would be too much
Don't need my own I/O board anymore Terasic put it all together : big Cyclone V, VGA, no external SRAM but plenty are available inside FPGA, µSD card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse. And not expensive at all, only audio is missing.

C1541 drive emulation debug on DE2
Adding my own VHDL work to some other people work to get FPGA reading D64 directly from sd card. Project is already able to load many games but still bugs to find out. Debug is going on with DE2 board.
